English Language Intensive Course for International Students (ELICIS)

The English Language Intensive Course for International Students (ELICIS) is conducted by the International Centre, University of Pune for a period of 4 months at 5 levels each. Students from different countries attend the course. The course prepares the foreign students from Non-English speaking backgrounds to cope with the education system at the Indian Universities.

ELICIS offers you an opportunity to:

  1. Equip yourself for your present and future academic, research & career pursuits, to understand classroom lectures, read textbooks, do reference reading, participate in classroom discussions, and write assignments and examination answers in English.

  2. Prepare yourself to function effectively in your future profession.

  3. Prepare yourself in social and other situations in which you may be called upon to use English.

The specific objective of this course is to develop the communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, with emphasis on grammar and vocabulary.

Each ELICIS programme is divided into three levels, i.e. Levels I, II & III,. At the beginning of each course, a test is conducted to determine the English proficiency level of the student. Following the test and results, students are divided into groups.

The five levels are run both simultaneously with other courses or independently. The admission to this course is subject to fulfillment of the conditions of eligibility.

The duration of each course is sixteen weeks, four hours a day, six days a week.

For those students who join the undergraduate & postgraduate courses at the University of Pune an English Proficiency Test (EPT) is mandatory. This is however waived for those ELICIS students who get an aggregate of B+ and above at the end of course. Students who obtain B+ (61%) and more shall be exempted from giving the English Proficiency Test (EPT), which is otherwise compulsory for all students taking admission in the University.
